Superhero Dreams
Maya: "Tara, let's jump from the terrace wall like superheroes!"
Tara: "Are you mad? It's so high! Amma will faint."
Maya: "But it will be so cool! We can land on that old mattress."
Tara: "That mattress has rusty springs. They poke out like monster teeth."
Maya: "Uff, you always spoil the fun. You're scared of everything."
Tara: "I'm not scared of everything. I just like my bones in one piece."
Maya: "Then what should we do? I'm bored. It's too hot to play outside."
Tara: "We can go to the kitchen. Ajji is making pakoras. We can steal some."
Maya: "Ajji will catch us in one second. She has eyes on her back."
Tara: "Then we ask nicely and help her. She gives extra when we help."
Maya: "Helping is boring. Jumping is exciting."
Tara: "Breaking your leg is also exciting… in a bad way."
Maya: "Hmm. Maybe just a tiny jump? From the first step of the stairs?"
Tara: "That’s okay. It's low. See? We can still be superheroes."
Maya: "Fine, but only if we get pakoras after."
Tara: "Deal. First tiny jumps, then hot pakoras with chutney."
Ajji: "What are you two planning now? Your whispers are louder than the pressure cooker."
Tara: "We wanted to jump from the terrace, but I said no."
Maya: "Yeah, Tara stopped me. She said it's not… sensible."
Ajji: "Good. Sensible means you use your brain before you use your legs."
Maya: "My legs are a little angry, but my brain agrees."
Tara: "See? Terrace jumping is silly, but pakora eating is very sensible."
Maya:sensible." "And tiny superhero jumps on the stairs are medium
Ajji: "Medium sensible children get extra pakoras."
Maya: "Then from now on, I will try to be at least medium sensible."
